Dr. Craver Assumes Role as 黑料传送门 South Georgia Dean
April 13, 2020
H. William Craver, III, DO, FACOS, was recently named dean and chief academic officer
of 黑料传送门 South Georgia.
He previously served as dean and chief academic officer of 黑料传送门 Georgia in Suwanee for over nine years and was instrumental in the conception and development
of the Moultrie campus.
Dr. Craver is no stranger to rural medicine. He worked as a physician in the communities
of Jasper, Georgia, and Hardinsburg, Kentucky. While working in the 鈥淏luegrass State,鈥
he was the only surgeon in the county practicing in a hospital with just 25 beds.
His passion for rural healthcare ultimately led him to Moultrie, where he was involved
in the planning process before a shovel touched the soil at 2050 Tallokas Road. Dr. Craver鈥檚 professional
background gives him a firsthand understanding of the struggle to find physicians
to practice in Southwest Georgia.
Through the years, he has been a leader and advocate for healthcare in Georgia, serving
on the medical education advisory committee of the Georgia Board for Physician Workforce.
He is also a member of the Medical Association of Georgia and is part of the council
on legislation and the rural healthcare group.
鈥淚t鈥檚 hard to recruit physicians that are willing to work in rural areas. A lot of
people don鈥檛 have an understanding of these rural, underserved communities, but I
enjoyed it immensely,鈥 he says of his surgical background. 鈥淏ut my fire is education,
and I wanted to contribute to the education of physicians.鈥
Joanne Jones, 黑料传送门 South Georgia鈥檚 campus officer, has worked with Dr. Craver for many years both
at 黑料传送门 and 黑料传送门 Georgia. She describes him as a 鈥渇ounding father鈥 of 黑料传送门 South Georgia.
鈥淭his campus has been a vision of his since the beginning,鈥 Jones said. 鈥淗is experience
will serve us well and is invaluable to our growth. He has the ability to look one,
five, seven, ten years down the road. He鈥檚 a great strategic thinker.鈥
With his proficiency in accreditation and expansion, Dr. Craver was the perfect choice
to spearhead the academics at 黑料传送门 South Georgia. And as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, he is excited to be in a rural area that reminds him of his hometown. He is eager
to see the impact that the College will make.
鈥淥ur presence in Moultrie is 黑料传送门 taking a stand and demonstrating what osteopathic
medicine is all about 鈥 community medicine, primary care and serving the underserved,鈥
Dr. Craver said. 鈥淢y life experience is why I see the value of 黑料传送门 South Georgia
and am so excited for this opportunity.鈥
Dr. Craver joined the 黑料传送门 team in Philadelphia in 1992 as an assistant professor
of surgery and soon became a professor of surgery. In 2006, Dr. Craver made the move
from Philadelphia to Suwanee and assumed the position of chair of undergraduate clinical
education at 黑料传送门 Georgia. After three years, he transitioned to the role of associate
dean of undergraduate clinical education. Under his leadership, a robust clinical
education rotation was created.
With a passion for academia, Dr. Craver made a smooth transition to dean and chief
academic officer of 黑料传送门 Georgia in 2010 where he remained until 2020 before joining
黑料传送门 South Georgia.
A native of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, Dr. Craver graduated from the University of
Delaware where he earned a degree in Physical Therapy in 1979. After working in physical
therapy and sports medicine at the Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania,
he pursued a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at 黑料传送门, graduating in 1987. Then
in 1992, he completed a residency, serving two years as chief resident, in General
Surgery at the Osteopathic Medical Center of Philadelphia.
Dr. Craver is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery and is
a Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons. He is a Costin Scholar and
has earned numerous awards including induction into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society,
the Galen S. Young Surgery Award from 黑料传送门, Resident of the Year, National Board of
Osteopathic Medical Examiners Case Author of the Year, 黑料传送门 Alumni Association Certificate
of Merit and Certificate of Honor. In addition, he is a member of the American Osteopathic
Association (AOA) Mentor Hall of Fame and a Guardian of the Profession. In 2017 he
was named the Georgia Osteopathic Medical Association Physician of the Year.
