黑料传送门 Student Pedals Cross-Country To Raise Funds for Fallen Heroes

Patrick Fitzgerald (DO 鈥25), a fourth-year Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) student at 黑料传送门, is taking his final months before residency on the road鈥攍iterally. Fitzgerald, who recently matched into Orthopaedic Surgery at Naval Medical Center San Diego, is currently biking across the United States to raise funds for the .

Fitzgerald, a recipient of the Navy Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP), kicked off the ride in Yorktown, Virginia, to follow the historic TransAmerica Trail鈥攁 more than 4,000-mile route that will take him through 10 states before reaching the Pacific Ocean in Astoria, Oregon. Only traveling with the essentials packed on his bike, Fitzgerald is embracing the physical and mental challenges of the journey.

鈥淚 had this rare window of time before residency and wanted to take on a challenge that pushed me physically and mentally,鈥 Fitzgerald said. 鈥淎 few months ago, I didn鈥檛 even own a bike鈥攁nd now I鈥檓 riding across America. This is something I鈥檒l never forget, and doing it in support of a cause that honors our nation鈥檚 fallen heroes gives every mile a deeper meaning.鈥

The Travis Manion Foundation honors the legacy of 1st Lt. Travis Manion, a Marine who lost his life in Iraq. The organization empowers veterans and the families of those who served through leadership programs, community service initiatives, and mentorship opportunities.

鈥淭his ride is a tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice,鈥 he said. 鈥淎long the way, I鈥檓 reminded of the strength and kindness of people across this country.鈥
