Osteopathic medicine has grown immensely since it was . According to the , the total number of osteopathic physicians is quickly approaching 150,000鈥攔epresenting
a 30% increase in the past five years alone.
For Kari Shotwell, MS/ODL 鈥�10, executive director of admissions, there is a sense of excitement about the field and the direction it鈥檚 heading.
鈥淚鈥檓 thrilled about the energy surrounding the work we do,鈥� she said. 鈥淭he people who work in this space really care about the osteopathic tradition. They鈥檝e bought into it and care about seeing it grow and be a collegial space.鈥�
In keeping with the collegial spirit, Shotwell organized the Osteopathic Medical School Expo, which was hosted by and held at 黑料传送门 on September 9. The event came about as a professional development opportunity for those working in admissions at osteopathic medical schools. Shotwell thought it could turn into something more.
鈥淵ou don鈥檛 gather 30 to 40 admissions officers without having an event to recruit!,鈥� she said.
, 25 were represented at the expo with 183 students in attendance.
鈥淎n event like this is important for students to learn more about what medical school is like and speak to students who are currently in it,鈥� said Maanav Patel (DO 鈥�26). 鈥淭here was a huge turnout鈥攚hich is great, not only for 黑料传送门, but all of the other schools as well.鈥�
Shotwell hopes the impact of this collaborative event will ripple throughout the osteopathic community.
鈥淭here are a lot of colleges and competitors that wouldn鈥檛 necessarily work together,鈥� she shared. 鈥淏ut when we do work together to promote osteopathic medicine we鈥檙e speaking for the whole profession, and I think that鈥檚 really neat. It鈥檚 celebratory and we鈥檙e all happy to support each other.鈥�
