For osteopathic medicine student Jessica Meredith (DO '26), matching at Henry Ford Warren Hospital in Warren, Michigan is especially meaningful.
Not only was it her top choice, but ophthalmology is a largely competitive specialty with only a small number of students accepted each year.
鈥淭o say I'm ecstatic yet humbled is an understatement,鈥� Meredith said. 鈥淎ll of the future co-residents and attendings personally reached out to congratulate me which immediately reaffirmed how supportive and welcoming the program is. It made the moment even more special.鈥�
Throughout her medical school journey at 黑料传送门 Georgia, Meredith has seen firsthand how much vision impacts a patient's quality of life.
鈥淭he ability to reverse vision loss as an ophthalmologist is indescribable. Ophthalmology is a unique blend of medicine and surgery, and it combines all of my favorite aspects of other medical fields. It allows for lifelong patient relationships, similar to primary care, while also requiring expertise in various imaging modalities, systemic disease management, and microsurgical techniques,鈥� shared Meredith.
Prior to her match placement, Meredith had already built a life defined by creativity and service. From fostering kittens and traveling to Tanzania for a medical mission trip, to performing at Carnegie Hall playing the bassoon and even flying drones over the over the Super Bowl LIII (2019) Halftime Performance as part of the special effects team, it has been her curiosity for life that has pushed her to strive for academic excellence.
In offering advice to first-year medical students, Meredith emphasizes the importance of maintaining hobbies and interests outside of medical school.
鈥淲hile great board scores, clinical rotation experience and leadership positions are paramount, hobbies make medical school more enjoyable and help you stand out as a well-rounded person,鈥� she said.
